Online facilitation basics
Best practices for Peer Supporters
Whether you've been leading in-person peer groups for years or are just beginning your facilitation journey, transitioning to online support has its own learning curve. But take heart—you're not alone. We’re here to guide you every step of the way.
A smooth and uninterrupted virtual meeting starts with a solid internet connection. We recommend speeds of at least 50–100 Mbps download and 10–20 Mbps upload to maintain clear video, audio, and screen sharing—especially if you're hosting group sessions or using other connected devices at home.
Not sure where you stand? Just Google “Test your internet speed” and click the Run Speed Test button. If your results are below the recommended range, you might consider upgrading your plan or limiting background internet use during meetings.
Set up a support-friendly space
Designating a consistent and thoughtful area for your online facilitation makes a big impact. Here are key things to consider:
What’s behind you?
- Turn on your webcam and look at your space as participants will.
- Avoid visual distractions like clutter, bold posters, personal documents, or anything that could be triggering or overly busy.
- Choose a neutral or calming background that promotes a safe, focused environment.
Lighting is important!
- Front-facing lighting makes you easier to see.
- Avoid strong backlighting that casts shadows.
- If you need better illumination, try affordable ring lights or web conferencing lamps.
Be heard clearly
- A quiet space is essential—reduce outside noise or family chatter when possible.
- Headphones with a microphone can improve audio quality significantly.
- Simple earbuds work fine, but dedicated headsets offer even more clarity.
Ground yourself in your purpose
Before you facilitate a group meeting, chatroom, or one-on-one coaching session, revisit the reason you’re here. You have lived experience, compassion, and training. You’ve received support and tools—and now you get to offer that to others. You’re helping reduce social isolation and support mental wellness through authentic connection. That’s powerful.
Optional Tip:
Write your personal “why” on a sticky note and place it near your screen. Before each meeting, pause to read and reflect. It’s a quiet reminder of the strength and intention behind your support.
